In Memoriam – Krisztián Vértes (1976–2025)

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our founder, colleague, and friend, Krisztián Vértes. A gifted artist and Egyptologist, Krisztián devoted his career to documenting Egypt’s monuments with extraordinary precision and care. From his earliest work in Theban tombs to his most recent projects at the Museo Egizio in Turin, he combined accuracy with artistry in a way that set his work apart.

Krisztián’s vision was also revolutionary. He introduced digital tools to the Epigraphic Survey in Luxor, reshaping how facsimiles were created and opening new possibilities for epigraphy. In 2018, he established digitalEPIGRAPHY as a platform to share tools, methods, and experiences with colleagues worldwide, ensuring that knowledge would be accessible, practical, and constantly evolving.

Through his drawings, publications, and teaching, he inspired countless colleagues and students. He showed that innovation could strengthen, rather than replace, the traditions of epigraphic documentation. His work continues to shape the way monuments are studied and preserved today.

Krisztián leaves behind an immeasurable legacy — not only in the projects he completed, but in the spirit of collaboration and curiosity that defined him. His absence is deeply felt, yet his presence endures in the work he created and the community he built.
